Mr Chawla gained his Fellowship in Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1994. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He has now been awarded the Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is on the panel of Examiners of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London.

Mr Chawla is a General Ophthalmologist and a Cataract surgeon with special interests in Multifocal lens implants and Oculoplastic surgery. He is Consultant Ophthalmic and Oculoplastic Surgeon with Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, based at Queens Hospital in Romford, Essex. He is a Director of Essex Vision and Essex Medical Consortium.

Mr Chawla is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Ophthalmology at Queen Mary, University of London, Barts and London Medical School.

Mr Chawla is a member of American, European, UK and Ireland Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Oxford and North of England Ophthalmological Societies.
